Sughrue secured a victory for its client, Goda Kaisha IP Bridge, in an inter partes review petition filed by Unified Patents as part of its campaign against certain Standard Essential Patents. The challenged patent, directed to an innovative variable length coding technique, is recognized as essential to the most widely-implemented video compression standards, HEVC/H.265 and its predecessor AVC/H.264. In denying the petition, the PTAB agreed with IP Bridge that Unified’s “proposed reasons to combine [the art] are conclusory and contrary to the teachings of the references.”
Sughrue attorneys Fadi N. Kiblawi, William H. Mandir and John F. Rabena represented IP Bridge at the PTAB.
