Biography

Kevin counsels multinational corporations across Japan, Europe, and the United States on U.S. patent strategy and prosecution. Over a 20-year career at Sughrue, he has prosecuted over 2,400 patent matters for leading companies in aerospace, process control, semiconductors, industrial sensing and process measurement, power electronics, RF and microwave components, embedded systems and industrial IoT, and precision electromechanical systems. Prior to entering law, Kevin was a Senior RF Engineer at Motorola, bringing hands-on technical depth to his patent practice.

Kevin serves on the Firm’s Management Committee, participating in firm governance, strategic planning, attorney compensation, and the hiring and development of attorneys and staff. He brings a balanced, deliberate approach to firm leadership, drawing on his experience working with clients and colleagues across multiple countries and practice environments.

Kevin has deep relationships with clients and foreign agents throughout Japan and Europe, and visits them annually to maintain and develop those relationships. He has lived and worked abroad, first in-house at a leading Japanese IP agent firm for two years before transitioning to Sughrue’s Tokyo office, where he served as a Resident Partner for an additional five years.

Kevin is committed to service in the intellectual property community through his involvement in the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA). He has served as Chair of the AIPLA IP Practice in Japan Committee, during which he led multiple delegations of attorneys to Japan to meet with the JPO, JPAA, JIPA, and other IP stakeholders, and currently serves on the AIPLA Harmonization Committee (by invitation of the AIPLA President), which focuses on substantive and procedural harmonization among the five major IP offices worldwide. He is also an active member of the AIPLA IP Practice in Europe Committee, and has participated in delegation trips to Europe.
