Brian is a Partner in the Washington DC office of Sughrue. With more than 25 years of experience in the field of intellectual property law, Brian handles patent matters for emerging and high-technology companies in various electrical and mechanical sciences, including optical fibers, biomedical devices, electrical and optical connectors, GPS, printers, welding technologies and a broad range of automotive technologies.

Brian's current practice is devoted to patent prosecution, inter partes review, strategic counseling on patent procurement and litigation, opinion preparation on matters relating to infringement and validity and infringement litigation. Brian counsels both domestic and foreign clients. His knowledge of both the U.S. and foreign patent systems affords his clients with a unique global perspective regarding worldwide filing and licensing strategies. During the course of his career, Brian has drafted and prosecuted hundreds of patent applications and assisted clients with building and managing their patent portfolios. Brian oversees the patent portfolios of several companies and handles all aspects of their intellectual property needs.

In addition to his litigation and prosecution experience, Brian has developed vast experience in complex U.S. Patent and Trademark Office proceedings such as appeals, reissues and post grant proceedings.

From 2013 to 2015, Brian was recognized as a leader in his field by Intellectual Asset Management's - IAM Patent 1000 magazine where he was listed among the top tier of practitioner in the U.S. for patent prosecution. This survey was a result of over 1000 interviews of both private practice and in-house professionals and were carried out by an independent research team.
