Sughrue Expands Biotechnology Practice

Sughrue welcomes J. Timothy (Tim) Meigs, as Of Counsel, to its Biotechnology Practice Group.  Tim has practiced patent law for over 10 years, focusing primarily on biotechnology patent law.  He began his practice at patent law firms in Greensboro and Raleigh, North Carolina.  Tim then spent six years specializing in biotechnology patent law at CIBA-Geigy/Novartis/Syngenta’s agricultural biotechnology research center in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, eventually serving as Managing Patent Attorney for Syngenta Biotechnology, Inc.  Most recently, he had global IP responsibility for Genetic Therapy, Inc., which was Novartis’ gene therapy subsidiary in Gaithersburg, Maryland.

Tim’s experience includes patent preparation and prosecution, client counseling, and patent infringement and validity assessments. In positions with CIBA-Geigy, Syngenta, and Novartis, Tim was listed as attorney of record on over 130 U.S. biotechnology patents. He has written and lectured on topics such the PTO’s written description and utility examination guidelines, evolving issues in claim construction, and recent judicial decisions in biotechnology patent law. He has also actively participated in professional associations such as AIPLA and the IP section of the NC Bar Association.
